CBD & Neuroinflammation in Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Dr Austin Quon,

2.3 million people worldwide are affected by Multiple sclerosis (MS). Debilitating pain occurs in approximately 50-70% of multiple sclerosis patients. Other symptoms include muscle spasticity, fatigue, inflammation, and depression. This typically also contributes to reduced physical activity, inadequate functional mobility and reduced quality of life.

MS is typically caused by neuroinflammation and demyelination in the central nervous system. Recently, researchers have investigated astrocytes as a potential target for neuro-therapies due to their essential roles in brain physiology and pathology. Normally functioning astrocytes are responsible for maintaining the health and integrity of nerve cells in the central nervous system. Dysfunction, dysregulation, and homeostatic imbalance of astrocytes can lead to symptoms such as Alzheimer-like and Multiple-Sclerosis neurodegeneration, sciatic nerve injury, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.

Scientists have focused on how CBD works on the body’s N8 mechanism to restore balance to the body’s inflammatory processes, specifically working on the ion channels on immune cells in the nervous system. studies have shown that CBD increases the effectiveness of immune cells surrounding the central and peripheral nervous system, and reduces neuroinflammation and demyelination in multiple sclerosis. This allows improved signalling of nerve cells and immune cells to induce the body’s N8 healing processes

As far as supplementation is concerned, studies have shown humans have tolerated large serving sizes of up to 1,500 mg per day for a chronic period without negative, long-term side effects or adverse reactions. Studies on the effects of plant-based cannabinoids have demonstrated improved motor activity, reduced CNS infiltrates, microglial activity, axonal damage, and restoration of the normal myelin sheath.
